How do I check behind my tuner?

  • Ask for references!
  • Beware of Speedy!
  • If he's in and out in 30 minutes... he didn't tune it!
  • Tuning fork or electronic tuner?
Either one is fine! Ultimately the quality of tuning is measured by how well the tuner uses what GOD gave him; his hearing skills, his brain, and his reasoning powers. The fork or the electronic tuner is only a tool.
  • Yeah, but how do I KNOW if he did a good job?
    • Sit down and play something (before he leaves!). If he missed something, He'll be glad to get it right for you before he leaves. (Keeps him from having to come back!)
    • Check the unisons. (keys with two or three wires per note). When you hit one of these notes there should be no beats (waaooo waaooo waaooo). The higher you go in the treble the harder it is to be perfect. There over over 1000 beats per second in the high treble. There is a phenomenon called "false beats" caused by faulty wire, or poor design.
    • Check the octaves. They should be clear with no beats until you get to "C" 2 octaves from the top. There will be some beats there. It's called "stretch" and it's supposed to be there.
